This is for the 's February contest: "Ballet Couples". The ballet in this picture is Les Sylphides (not to be confused with La Sylphide), also known as Chopiniana. I had recently seen a live performance of La Sylphide at my school and the beauty of the ballet left a big impression on me so I decided to do my entry on this particular ballet.
The ballet itself has no story line and is, quote Wikipedia: "a romantic reverie" of a young poet dancing with Sylphs, forest spirits who in this ballet represent the ideal women. I chose Mytho and Ahiru as the characters for this pas de deux because in my mind Ahiru/Tutu has a very symbolic role for Mytho. She represents the feelings he's yearning to regain again, and in this way reminds me of the young man's search for an ideal in the ballet.
I finished this piece from beginning to end in 6 hours (probably because of the coffee I drank). I originally intended to only start this piece but instead of studying I ended up finding myself focusing all of my attention on it, so that even if I wanted to do something else I couldn't.
I actually intended to do something else with this piece but since I wanted to finish it today (so it won't haunt me later on and distract me again), for this contest I'm just submitting this part of the drawing. I'm actually thinking about making this into a Japanese DVD like image, with this picture in the foreground and a special background on a leather book cover-like base. If everything goes right I'll post that someday.
EDIT: As per 's critique, I've changed Ahiru's eyes a little so they're a tad more spaced apart now. Thanks for noticing that!
Wooo, Mytho!! Haven't seen Mytho's art lately <3 Loved it, like usual (haha.. I'm such a sucker for your pics TwT). It would look awesome as a DVD cover. Gotta love Ahiru looking so beautiful and distinguished... and actually dancing en pointe.
Ooh, you did a lovely job on this! Great job on the characters and the poses. I really like the frame you added around the picture too and the soft coloring. Do you mind if I give you a small critique? Ahiru/Tutu's eyes are slightly off. If you could just move the left (her left) eye just little more further away from the other... I'm just saying this 'cause I think your piece is gorgeous and this was the only thing that stuck out to me, critique-wise. In any case, this is beautiful - wonderful job!
I'll see if I can fix the thing with the eyes in the final DVD image I'm thinking about doing (and just to clarify, you mean her left eye from her perspective right? Not from the viewer's perspective?). Thanks for the suggestion. ^^
DeviantART has partnered with FAIR to help promote equality through The Love Unites Shepard Fairey Equality Project. We're asking deviants to align themselves with this cause and have their work judged by Shepard Fairey himself!
Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it. Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article.
In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
For those who have many watchers, and for those who dont have many, it is hard to know how one retains that interest as well as receive more. This article explores the basics of watchers and how we react to certain situations. Although it does not affect some deviants, and the tips are generally related to common sense, we hope the article is a worthwhile read and that the majority learn something from reading this.
